Free Digital Marketing Courses With a Certificate (2026 Guide)

Free digital marketing courses are everywhere. Free certificates are rarer, and the fine print changed a lot over the past year. Google's old Digital Garage course now lives on its Skillshop platform. Coursera replaced its free audit option with a one-module preview. HubSpot's SEO course link now leads to a course on answer engine optimization.

We checked each program below on its official site in October 2026. Here is what is actually free, what the certificate costs, how long each takes and how much it can help in a job search.

Google's free courses: Skillshop and the end of Digital Garage

Search for the "Google Digital Garage certificate" and you will find guides that no longer match reality. The old Digital Garage course address now redirects to Google's Grow with Google site. The Fundamentals of Digital Marketing course itself sits on Skillshop, Google's training platform, in a category still labeled Google Digital Garage.

The current version runs about 40 hours across 17 modules and covers newer topics, from AI tools to video marketing. Finishing it earns a badge for your Skillshop and LinkedIn profiles. That is not the same as the old downloadable Digital Garage certificate. For its Digital Skills for Africa program, Google says certificate verification was discontinued after the move to Skillshop.

Google Ads and Analytics certifications

Skillshop is also where Google's product certifications live. Google says access to the platform, awards and most certifications is free. Google Ads certifications cover Search, Display, Video, Shopping ads and Apps, and Google Analytics has its own certification.

  • Exam time: 75 minutes per Google Ads assessment, with no pausing.
  • Passing score: 80 percent or higher.
  • Retakes: if you fail, you can try again after one day.
  • Validity: one year, then you recertify.

These are product tests, not beginner lessons. They carry the most weight when a job ad names Google Ads or Google Analytics directly.

Is the Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Certificate free?

No, though you can start without paying. This is Google's Career Certificate in digital marketing, taught on Coursera. In the U.S. it costs $49 a month after a 7-day free trial. Google estimates about six months at 10 hours a week, and Coursera says it can be finished for under $300. Coursera also offers financial aid.

Two extras matter. The American Council on Education recommends 9 college credits for completing it, which can help if you later enroll in an online degree. Google also says graduates can reach an employer consortium of more than 150 U.S. companies that have committed to considering them for entry-level roles. That is a pool of employers, not a job guarantee.

HubSpot Academy: free courses and free certifications

HubSpot calls its certifications "completely free & online." The Digital Marketing certification course has 10 lessons, 30 videos and 8 quizzes, about 3 hours 24 minutes in all. Content Marketing takes about 8 hours, Social Media Marketing about 5 and Digital Advertising about 4.

Watch the expiry dates. HubSpot's non-product certifications, such as Inbound, Content Marketing and Email Marketing, are valid for two years and one month. Its software certifications last 13 months.

One change worth knowing: HubSpot's old SEO training link now redirects to AEO Fundamentals, a free certification course on answer engine optimization with 7 lessons and about 2 hours 20 minutes of video. It reflects HubSpot's shift toward optimizing content for AI-generated answers.

Semrush Academy

Semrush Academy offers free courses and free certifications, mostly on SEO and content. Exams usually have 10 to 15 questions and must be finished in one sitting. You get three attempts, then a one-month wait. Each certification is valid for one year.

Semrush itself is paid software, with a seven-day free trial of the main platform, so expect some lessons to feature its tools.

Meta Blueprint: free training, paid certification exam

Meta's training is free. Its certification is not. Meta offers free courses, study guides and practice tests, then charges for the online exam: between $99 and $150, with the price varying by country. The Digital Marketing Associate certification, the beginner option, stays valid for 24 months. Professional certifications in media buying, media planning, creative strategy and marketing science last 12 months.

If social ads are your target, the free courses alone are worth doing. Pay for the exam only once job listings you want actually ask for it.

Coursera, edX and LinkedIn Learning: what "free" means now

Coursera ended its classic free audit on August 8, 2025. It now lets you preview the first module of nearly every course for free, graded assessments included. Full access and certificates require payment, unless you are approved for financial aid.

edX still has a free audit track. You get temporary access to course materials, but not graded assignments, and no certificate. When the audit period ends you lose access, unless you upgrade to the paid verified track before the deadline.

LinkedIn Learning comes with LinkedIn Premium, which offers a free trial to eligible members. Trial length varies, you must enter a credit card, and the trial turns into a paid plan unless you cancel. Cancel a trial and you cannot start another for at least 12 months.

For search ads beyond Google, Microsoft Advertising's Learning Lab offers certifications in Search Advertising, Display & Video, and Retail. Check its current exam terms before you start.

Free certificate vs. paid certificate program, bootcamp or online degree

Paid programs cost far more. Noble Desktop, for example, lists its Digital Marketing Certificate at $3,995 for 126 hours of training. Bootcamps and university certificate programs vary widely, so compare the total cost, the hours of live teaching and the portfolio work you leave with.

Before paying yourself, look for someone else to pay. Some employers offer tuition assistance, and IRS rules let an employer cover up to $5,250 a year in educational assistance tax-free. If you are out of work or on a low income, your local American Job Center may be able to fund training under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

A full degree is a different decision. For market research analysts and marketing specialists, the BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education, whether earned online or on campus.

How free certificates help in a job search, and where they fall short

A free certificate alone rarely gets you hired. A badge shows you finished a course. It does not show you can plan a campaign, read the results and explain what you would change.

What a certificate can do is show a hiring manager that you know a platform's basics, and give you something specific to discuss in an interview. It works best paired with proof.

Turn a free course into proof

  • Match certificates to job ads. If listings in your area ask for Google Ads or HubSpot, start there.
  • Build one small project per certificate: a sample search campaign plan, a content calendar, or an SEO review of a local nonprofit's website, with permission.
  • List each certification with its issue and expiry date on your resume and LinkedIn profile. An expired badge looks careless.
  • Write down what you tested and what changed. Real numbers from a small project beat a long list of badges.

Digital marketing salary: what the jobs pay

For market research analysts and marketing specialists, the BLS occupation closest to most digital marketing jobs, the national median was $37.87 an hour ($78,760 a year) in May 2025. Entry-level pay sits lower; the 10th percentile was $20.86 an hour. The BLS projects 7 percent job growth from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average. State medians vary widely:

StateMedian hourly pay, marketing specialists and analysts (May 2025)
New York$47.39
Washington$45.73
California$45.53
Illinois$38.04
North Carolina$37.70
Georgia$36.47
Florida$36.27
Ohio$35.00
Texas$34.87
Pennsylvania$33.06
Mississippi$27.23

These medians cover all experience levels. A first job usually pays less.

A free 8-week study plan

  • Week 1: HubSpot's Digital Marketing certification, about 3.5 hours, to learn the vocabulary.
  • Weeks 2-4: Google's Fundamentals of Digital Marketing on Skillshop, about 40 hours, or roughly 13 hours a week.
  • Week 5: One Google Ads certification, usually Search. Work through the Skillshop training, then take the 75-minute exam.
  • Week 6: A Semrush Academy SEO course and exam, or HubSpot's AEO Fundamentals.
  • Weeks 7-8: One portfolio project using what you learned, then update your resume and LinkedIn profile.

Total fees: $0, as long as you skip Meta's paid exam and cancel any trials in time.

Programs change often, so confirm the details on each official site before you start. This is an independent guide with no affiliation to Google, HubSpot, Meta, Semrush, Coursera, edX, LinkedIn, Microsoft or Noble Desktop.
